…but you can hold an umbrella.
Life is an unpredictable journey full of various challenges. Some of these challenges may be easy to handle, while others may be beyond our control. For example, just like we cannot control the weather, we also have no control over the actions or behaviour of others. It is beyond our reach. However, we can control our actions, decisions, and attitudes towards situations that we cannot control. When it’s raining, we can use an umbrella to stay dry. And if we choose to go out without an umbrella, we know we’ll get wet. Therefore, assessing which situations we can control and which we cannot is essential. Only then can we respond appropriately.
“You cannot stop the rain, but you can hold an umbrella.”
Write Oneself
It is only natural to feel frustrated or despair when faced with situations beyond our control.
However, instead of insisting that situations change, we can change our attitude towards them. Observing a problem as a neutral observer helps us see it objectively and recognise when it is beyond our control. With this acceptance, we free ourselves from emotional attachments to anything outside our control and focus our energy on what we can change.
When we have the potential to change a situation, it is of paramount importance that we take action. We should focus our energy on positive steps towards making that change. This may include learning a new skill, setting healthy boundaries, or seeking support from loved ones or professionals.
Writing is a powerful tool for personal growth and self-awareness. When we write down our struggles, we can release what we cannot control and take responsibility for what we can change. Writing our thoughts and feelings can bring clarity of mind, help us identify limiting beliefs, and shift our perspective to a more positive outlook.
It takes practice and patience to let go of what we cannot control and take ownership of our actions. Doing so allows us to navigate life’s challenges and become more self-aware confidently.
